Description Alpha subunit of calcium calmodulin dependent kinase II (CaMKII) protein, highly enriched at synapse is important in synaptic plasticity, learning and long-term memory. The 5’ part (nt 1-94) of 3’UTR of CaMKII mRNA mediates its dendritic targeting. An inhibitory element located downstream in the 3’UTR prevents CaMKII mRNA transport into dendrites. Prolonged depolarization override transport repression thus suggesting an anctivity-sensitive interaction between the two control elements. A similar dendritic localization element has been found to be active in the 3’UTR of neurogranin (Ng) mRNA, coding for a neuronal specific calmodulin binding protein. The minimal targeting signal denoted as CaMKII/Ng dendritic localization element (CNDLE) corresponds to a highly conserved 28-nt region.
